HMRC Notices: Tax Codes and Loans
Fetch P6, P9 and student loan notices from HMRC and apply them to your employees
HMRC send employers notices through their Data Provisioning Service: new tax codes (P6 and P6B during the year, P9 for the next tax year), student loan start and stop notices (SL1, SL2), postgraduate loan start and stop notices (PGL1, PGL2), and notifications about National Insurance numbers and your submissions. dynamik.app fetches them and applies the ones that change an employee's record.
Fetching notices
- Go to PAYE RTI
- Under HMRC notices, click Fetch from HMRC
- Enter your Government Gateway password. It is used to sign in to HMRC for this fetch and is never stored
Only notices you have not fetched before come back. Each one is matched to an employee by National Insurance number, or by payroll ID (HMRC's works number).
What happens to each notice
- P6, P6B, P9 — the employee's tax code is changed to the one HMRC sent, with the Scottish or Welsh prefix and the Week 1 / Month 1 basis on the code. A P6 that gives previous pay and tax fills the P45 figures
- SL1 — student loan deductions start on the plan HMRC name; SL2 — they stop
- PGL1 — postgraduate loan deductions start; PGL2 — they stop
- NOT, NVR and HMRC messages — shown for you to read; nothing is changed from them
A notice whose effective date has come is applied as soon as it arrives. One that is not due yet - a P9 fetched before 6 April - shows Apply; click it once the date has come. A notice for someone who is not an employee here shows No employee: check the National Insurance number and payroll ID on the employee, as HMRC know them.
